Haiti 2010: Under His Sky, Too

Different pattern, same God.
~~Gloria Noelliste, Denver Seminary

This morning's Salt and Light seminar at Denver Seminary was filled with reality and hope. The critical incident team that traveled to Haiti, including several licensed Christian couselors, a chaplain, and the Director of the Grounds Institute of Public Ethics, reported on their March 2010 trip. Their collective conclusion was that the Haitians are rebuilding their country. Our role is to support them in their effort, not to judge or take over lest we short-circuit the process.

The goal of this team: "Care for Wounded Healers" by listening and helping them process their pain. So many Haitian medical professionals and clergy are caring for the masses while they grieve their own losses. Post-trauma is pandemic, and many people have been afraid to sleep or worship indoors for fear of aftershock. Many of the nation's leaders ask the same questions we would ask: "Did this earthquake happen because we are cursed?" and "Is God good?"

The good news communicated by this team is the answer to the first question is no, and answer to the second is yes. By reinvigorating a group of several hundred national leaders, hundreds of thousands of Haitians are doing more than fixing things -- they are experiencing inner restoration, i.e. their hearts and minds are understanding the Lord in a fresh way.

In the face of disaster, our only hope is to draw near to Him. The patterns of the sky and circumstances we face may differ across the globe, but no matter where we are, He is still God. By all means, let's keep praying for that tiny nation but with the realization that many are embracing truth and hope.

Another request came at the end of seminar: The rainy season is coming and with it concerns about increase in disease. Pray for the medical teams in Haiti who may be dealing with additional challenges.
